A very famous graffiti artist, Banksy is believed to be born in the year 1974 at Yate, south Gloucestershire, near Bristol, England. Born to a photocopier engineer, a butcher by profession, he became involved in graffiti during the late 1980’s. His work is said to be inspired from the Bristol underground scene which involved the association between several artists and musicians.
His style of art is unique. He began working with the stencil, and this has almost become a style of art associated with him. His work is often satirical in nature. The theme of his work revolves mainly around politics, culture and ethics. His work often comprises of both images and slogans, and his subjects include animals like the monkey and rats, children, the elderly, the policemen, to name a few.

Best known for his compelling stencil graffiti, his work is found in walls and billboards in cities around the world. Most of this is illegal which is why he keeps his identity a secret. He once managed to sneak in a fake prehistoric cave painting and install it in the British museum. It was a while before the authorities could detect the fake. Ironically it was included to the museum’s collection! He also managed to slip in seditious and sardonic pieces of art onto the walls of four major New York museums, two of which are still in place.
Braving threats, Banksy managed to paint on the walls of the West Bank barrier in Israel. The security guards shot warning shots at him but he defied it all and managed to make his point. Though the reactions were mixed, it sure raised a lot of global attention. He has even managed to get inside the Louvre, Paris, and hang a version of the Mona Lisa, with a smiling face!! He has also painted an elephant and placed an inflatable Guantanamo detainee in Disneyland, California.
If it is possible to get your hands on a Banksy signed print it could prove to be a sound investment although the prices are still sky high!
